then. Literary forgeries passed for genuine productions ; and the native scholars who have been duped by them owing to their credulity are miserably incapable of detecting them. Even the so-called Tamil scholars of the present day who profess to follow the critical and historical methods in their researches cannot discriminate the famous Brahman author of Kurinjippattu from the saintly composer of the SivaPeruman Tiruvantadi, or even from that recent Dravidian writer of an anti-Brahmanical song; or the author of Gnana Vettiyan from the immortal writer of the Kural. We give below specimens from three different poems wrongly attributed to one and the same Kapilar by Tamil scholars of the old orthodox school :-
(1) அறங்கரைந்து வயங்கிய நாவற்பிறங்கிய
வரைசால் வெள்வி முடித்த கேள்வி
யந்தண ரருங்கல மேற்ப நீர்பட்ட
டிருஞ்சே றாடிய மணன்மலி முற்றத்துக்
களிறுநிலை முனை இய தாரருந் தகைப்பிற்
புறஞ்சிறை வயிரியற் காணின் வல்லே
யெஃகுபடை யறுத்த கொய்சுவற் புரவி
யலங்கும் பாண்டி விழையணிந் தீமென
வானாக் கொள்கையை.-Pad. VII. 64.
(2) போகபந்தத் தந்தமின்றி நிற்பீர் புனைத் தார்முடிமே னாக
பந்தத் தந்தநாளம் பிறையிறையான்பயந்த மாகமந்தத்
தந்தமா மழைபோன்ற மதத்துக்க தப்போ ரேக தந்தத்
தெந்தைசெந் தாளிணை பணிந்தேத்துமினே.-Mut, 10.
