HEDGE


George was graduated from Lafayette college in 1845, and from Princeton tlieoiogical seminary in 1848 He was ordained to the Presbyterian min- istry, Feb. 8, 1849, and was pastor at Port Byron, X.Y., 1848-56; Portage, Wis., 1857-GO; Janesville, Wis., 1860-61; Indianapolis, Ind., 1861-67; and Albany, N.Y., 1867-70. He was president of Hanover college. Ind., from 1870 until 1879, wlien lie resigned and was succeeded by the Rev. Daniel W. Fislier, D.D. He was pastor at Avondale, Cincinnati. Ohio, 1879-88; secretarj'of the general iissembiy's special committee on the ministerial relief fund, 1888-89; and pastor at Reading, Pa., after 1889. Hanover college con- ferred upon him the degree of D.D. in 1868 and tliat of LL.D. in 1890.

HEDDING, Elijah, M.E. bishop, was born in Pine Plains, X.V.. Jan. 7, 1780. His mother and grandmother became converts to Methodism under the preaching of Benjamin Abbott in 1789 and the boy united with the Methodist church. The family removed to Starksborough, Vt., and there he became indifferent to a religious life, but would occasionally, when the minister was not present, read a sermon of Wesley to the congre- gation. In this way he finallj' became interested in religious work, and in 1799, before he was licensed to preach, was drafted as a supply. In 1801 he was admitted to the New York confer- ence; in 1807 became presiding elder of the New Hampshire district; in 1811 preached in the Boston district; in 1817 was presiding elder of the Portland, Maine, district; in 1821 was preacher at Lynn, Mass., and in 1823 presiding elder of the Boston district. In the general con- ference of 1824, held at Baltimore. Md.. he was elected bishop and made his residence in Lynn. Ma,s.s., removing in 1851 to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 1848 he was relieved from obligation to labor but his salary of §700 per annum was continued and he declined an offer of an increase. He died in Poughkeepsie. N.Y., April 9, 1852.

HEDGE, Frederic Henry, eilucator, was born at Cambridge. Mass.. Dec. 12, 1805: son of Prof. Levi and Mary fKneelandj Hedge. He received his early education under the tutelage of George Bancroft, the historian whom in 1818 he accom- panied to Germany. He attended school there until 1823, when he returned to the United States. He was graduated from Harvard universit}*, A.B.. 1825. A.M. and B.D., 1828; and was minister at West Cambridge. Mass., 1829-35; at Bangor, Maine. 18:r)-.5ii: and at Providence, R.I., 1850-56. In 1856 lie was called to the First Parish church in Brofjkline. Mass., and in the .same year was made non-resident profes.sor of ecclesia.stical his- tory in Harvard divinity school, which post he held until 1878. and literature at Harvard until 1884. He was married in 1830 to Lucy, daughter of the Rev. John Pierce, D.D., of Brookline, Mass. He was editor of the Christian Examiner, 1857-61 ; was a member of the Massachusetts historical society, a fellow of the American academy of arts and sciences, and a mem- ber of the American association for the advancement of .sci- ence. Harvard con- ferred upon him the degrees of S.T.D. in 1852, and LL.D. in 1886. Among his published works are: Prose Writers of Ger- many (1848); lieason in lieliyion (1865); Primeval World of He- hrew Tradition (1869); Ways of the Spirit ( 1877) ; Atheism in

Philosophy and Other Essays (1884) ; Hours tcith the German C7«ss!'cs (1886) ; Martin Luther and Other Essays (1888) ; Metrical Translations and Foems (with Mrs. A. L. Wister. 1888) : Sermons (1891). He died in Cambridge. Mass.. Aug. 21. 1890.

HEDGE, Frederic Henry, librarian, was born at West Cambridge, Mass.. June 20, 1831. son of the Rev. Frederic Henrj- and Lucy (Pierce) Hedge. His preparatory education was acquired in Bangor, Maine, and in Cambridge, Mass., and he was graduated from Harvard in 1851. He was elected a member of the American association for the ad- vancement of science and of the .American lii)rarv association in \x7i). and was one of the organizers of the :\!;iv.sichiisHtts library club.
