I understand Your Excellency's command,
And forthwith haste to enter on my duty.

[Exit Santa Anna, followed by Prado.]

Scene VIII.

Bradburn's tent. Bradburn appears equipped for the journey. Enters Elsie. José Prado, Santa Anna's servant, is seen protruding his head from beneath the tent-canvas.

Elsie.

Where goest thou, father?

Bradburn.

To the Alamo,


Whose garrison, by my commander's will,
I am to summon, that they render up
Themselves, their arms, and all the fort contains.

Elsie.

And weenest thou a moment, that they will
Accede to thy dishonoring demand?

Bradburn.

I cannot tell thee; the result will show.
Yet when the hopelessness of their defence,
Their isolation and impending doom,
