Sarguja, Raja of; Maharaja Bahadur Ragunath Saran Sanga Deo; b. 1860; succeeded, 1879; area of the State, 6,103 sq. miles; population, 300,000; the state is the largest and the most important of the Chota Nagpur tributary Mahals; it came under British control in 1818; Maharaja Bahadur (Personal), 1896. Address: Byrampur, Sarguja, Chota Nagpur, C.P.

Sarkar, Ananda Prasad, B.C.E., Rai Bahadur (1908), Superintending Engineer; b. 1858; educ: at the Sibpur Engineering College; entered Government service as an Apprentice Engineer, 1885; did excellent work on the Sone canals and attracted the notice of his superiors; promoted to the second Calcutta division, 1898; was in charge of the Albert Victor Leper Asylum, Gobra, the new buildings at Hastings house, and the Presidency Jail; appointed as Superintending Engineer of the S.W. Circle, Calcutta. Address: Calcutta, India.

Sarvothama Rao, Canchi; B.A., I.S.O.; District Registrar, Tanjore; b. 1856; joined service as Accountant, Board of Revenue, Madras, 1878; was Assistant Accountant, Office of the Inspector-General of Registration, 1884; Sub-Registrar, 1st grade, 1895; Manager,:Office of the Inspector-General of Registration, 1896; services lent to Baroda State from 1897-99; was Dis rict Registrar, Kurnool, 1900; served in the same capacity in other districts; retired, 1913. Address: Saidapet, Chinglepet District, Madras Presidency.

Sassoon, Arthur Abraham David, M.V.O. (1903); C.V.O. (1907); b. 1840; 5th s. of late David Sassoon, Bombay; m. Eugenie Louise, d. of late Achillie Perugia of Prieste, 1873. Address-. 2, Albert Gate, S.W. 8, King’s Gardens, Home, Sussex.

Sassoon, Hon’ble Sir David, Kt. (1905), Merchant, Bombay, 1849; joined the firm of Messrs. E. D. Sassoon in China, 1867; started a firm of his own under the name of Sassoon J. David & Co., Bombay, 1874; opened branches in Hongkong, Shanghai and Kobe; a leading Cotton merchant of Bombay and Manager of David and Standard Mills; was Chairman of the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association; Member of the Bombay Corporation, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Bombay Corporation, 1909; took a prominent part in establishing the Bank of India and has been its Chairman from the start; Sheriff of Bombay, 1905; raised a sum of £5,000 in aid of the Kangra Valley earth quake relief fund; presented a statue of Emperor George V to the City of Bombay on the occasion of His Majesty’s visit to India; has contributed liberally to the Prince of Wales’ Museum and other charitable institutions; Justice of the Peace.
