familie, to give them in season their measure of wheate? 43Blessed is that servant, whom when the Lord commeth, he shal find so doing. 44Verily I say to you, that over al things which he possesseth, he shal appoint him. 45But if that servant say in his hart, My Lord is long a comming; and shal begin to strike the servants and handmaides, and eate and drinke, and be drunke: 46the Lord of that servant shal come in a day that he hopeth not, and at an houre that he knoweth not, and shal devide him, and shal appoint his portion with the infidels. 47And that servant that knew the wil of his Lord, and prepared not himself, and did not according to his wil, shal be beaten with many stripes. 48But he that knew not, and did things worthie of stripes, shal be beaten with few. And every one to whom much was given, much shal be required of him: and to whom they committed much, more wil they demand of him. 49I came to cast fire on the earth; and what wil I but that it be kindled? 50But I have to be baptized with a Baptisme: and how am I straitned until it be dispatched. 51 Mt. 10, 34.* Thinke you that I came to give [1] peace on the earth? No, I tel you, but separation. 52For there shal be from this time, five in one house devided: three against two, and two, against three. 53There shal be devided, the father against the Sonne, and the sonne against his father, the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother, the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

54 Mt. 16, 2.* And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, by and by you say, A shoure commeth, and so it commeth to passe: 55and when the south wind blowing, you say, That there wil be heate: and it commeth to passe. 56Hypocrites, the face of the Heaven and of the earth you have skil to discerne: but this time how doe you not discerne? 57And why of your selves also judge you not that which is just? 58 Mt. 5, 25.* And [2] when thou goest with thy adversarie to the Prince, in the way endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exactour, and the exactour cast thee into prison. 59I say to thee, thou shalt not goe out thence, until thou pay the very last mite.

ANNOTATIONS.

Chap. XII.

Open confession of our faith.1. Every one that confesseth.) A Catholike man is bound to confesse his faith, being called to account or examined by Jew, Heathen, or Heretike, concerning the same. Neither is it enough to keepe Christ in his hart, but he must also acknowledge him in his wordes and deedes. And to deny Christ, or any Article of the Catholike faith, for shame or feare of any worldly creature, hath no lesse punishment, then to be denied, refused, and forsaken by Christ at the houre of his death before al his Angels: Which is an other manner of presence and Consistorie, then any Court or Session that men can be called to for their faith, in this world.

The Holy Ghost teacheth every unlearned Catholike to give sufficient reason of his faith.11. Be not careful.) That the poore unlearned Catholike should not be discouraged, or make his excuse that he is a simple man, not able to answer cunning Heretikes, nor to give a reason of his beleefe, and therfore must suffer or say any thing rather then come
