7And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes of John: ″ What went you out ″ into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? 8But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in Kings houses. 9But what went you out to see? a Prophet? yea I tel you and more then a Prophet. 10For this is he of whom it is written: Mal. 3, 1.Behold I send myne angel before thy face, which shal prepare thy way before thee. ✠
11Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among the borne of women a greater then John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the Kingdom of Heaven, is greater then he. 12And Luc. 16, 16.* from the dayes of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent beare it away. 13For al the Prophets and the Law prophecied unto John: 14and if you wil receave it, he is Mal. 4, 5.* ″ Elias that is for to come. 15He that hath eares to heare, let him heare.
16And Luc. 7, 31.* whereunto shal I esteeme this Generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market-place, 17which crying to their companions, say, we have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned. 18For Mt. 3, 4.* John came neither ″ eating nor drinking; & they say: He hath a Divel. 19The Sonne of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glotton and a winedrinker, a frend of Publicans and sinners. And wisedom is justified of her children.
20Then Lu. 10, 13.* began he to upbraide the cities, wherin were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance. 21Woe be to thee Corozain, wo be to thee Beth-saida: for if in Tyre & Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had done ″ penance in heairecloth & ashes long agoe. 22But neverthelesse, I say to you, it shal be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgement, then for you. 23And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to Heaven? thou shalt come downe even unto Hel. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day. 24But notwithstanding I say to you, that it shal be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgement, then for thee.
