Mael 161 Mahdi succeeded Ishun Singh his father to the government of Jai- purin the year 1760 A. D. Hedied inlTVS A. D. and was succeeded by his son Pirthi Singh, a minor, who was soon after deposed, and his brother Partap Singh ascended the gaddi the same year, and died in 1803 A. D. Mael, ^i^, the poetical name of Mirza Kuth-uddm, a nobleman of the reign of the emperor ' Alamgir. He was an excellent poet, but latterly became distracted and died eight days after Mulla Nasir 'AH, in the month of March 1697 A. D., Eamazan, 1108 A. H. His brother Mirza Nizam-uddin surnamed Tala was also an elegant poet. Maftun, Ui^^^^j poetical name of Momin 'All a poet. Maftun, c)'^^'"} the poetical title of Ghulam Mustafa, a brother of Razi-uddin Saruri who was usually called Ghulam Murtaza. He is the author of a Diwan. He died at the age of 30, ahout the year 1755 A. D., 1168 A. H. Maghmum, (V"**'*; poetical name of Eamjas, a Hindu of Lakhnau, and author of an Urdu Diwan. He was em- ployed by Mumtaz-uddaula, Mr. Johnson, and was living in 1785 A. D., 1199 A. H. Maghrabi Shaikh, c5i^*^^'il-"i poetical appellation of Mu- hammad Shir'm. He was a friend of Kamal Khujandi, and like him a profound Sufi. He died at Tabrez 1416 A. D., 819 A. H., and is buried at Surkhab. Having heen given to the most disgusting vices during his life- time, he is considered as a saint. He is the author of a Diwan called " Kasaed Maghrabi," and several other works. Mahalbat Jang, vide 'Alf Wardi Khan. Mahabat Khan, ty^"^ <^^^'°, whose proper name was Zamana Beg, was the son of Ghor Beg, a native of Kabul. He had attained the rank of a commander of 500 under Akbar, and was raised to the highest dignities and em- ployments by the emperor Jahangir. He enjoyed a high place in the opinion of the people, and was considered as the most eminent of all the emperor's subjects. In the month of February, 1626 A. D., Jumada II, 1035 A. H., he seized the emperor's person, (because he (the emperor) never consulted him, hut followed the advice of his wife Nur Jahan in all affairs), and carried him to his own tents where he remained a state prisoner for some time, but was soon released after a severe battle, by his wife Niir Jahan. In the second year of the emperor Shah Jahan, the government of Dehli was conferred on him. He died in the Dakhin in 1634 A. D., 1044 A. H., and his corpse was conveyed to Delili and buried there. After his death his eldest son Mii'za Aman-ullah received the title of Khtin Zaman, and his second son Luhrasp was honoured with the same title of Slahabat Khan. Mahabat Khan had his house huilt on the bank of the river Jamna on a plot of land of 50 bigas in Agrah, though little of it now remains, there are some parts of its ruins still to he seen. Mahabat Khan, >J-^ "^'t^j whose original name is Luhrasp, was the second son of the celebrated Mahabat Khan of the reign of Jahangir after whose death in 1634 A. D., 1044 A. H., he received this title. He was twice made governor of Kabul, and had the command of the army in the Dakhin. He died in 1674 A. D., 1085 A. H., in the reign of 'Alamgir on his way from Kabul to the presence. Vide Luhrasp. She was married to the emperor Babar Shah, and became the mother of Humayun. cihe was living about the year 1561 A. D., 969 A. H., as appears from an inscription on the gate of an old Madrasa (or college) and masjid constructed hy her in that year near the fort of old Dehli called Din Panah. The numerical words of the inscription from which the year of the build- ings is known, are " Khair Manazil" or the Mansions of Bliss. She must have been then more than 70 years of age. Maha Singh, *^'*» the grandson of Eaja Man Singh Kachhwaha of Ameir (now Jaipur), and son of Partaj" Singh. He served under the emperor Jahangir, and died in 1617 A. D. He was the father of Mirza E&ja Jai Singh. Vide Man Singh. Maha Singh, a Sikh Eaja of Labor, who was the father of Maharaja Eanjit Singh. He extended his rule and died in 179:2 A. D., when his wife became regent with Lakhpat Singh minister. Mah Bano, sister of Khan 'Azfm Koka. She was married to 'Abdul Eahfm Khan, KhanKhanan, son of , Bairam Khan about the year 1572 A. D., 980 A. H., and died 1597 A. D., 1005 A. H. Mah Chuehak Begam, one of the wives of the emperor Humayun, and mother of the prince Farrukh Fal, surnamed Muhammad Hakim. Mahdi, LS'^i^j the first khalif of the Fatimites in Africa. Mahdi 'Ali Khan, U^-^ ij^ ^'^^> grandson of Ghulam Ilusain Khan, the historian. He resided in Behar in 1801 A. D. Mahdi 'Ali Khan, Hakim, ^^'^ t^'^t* prime-minister of Nasir-uddin Haidar, king of Audh. The Iron Suspension Bridge over the Kalinadi at Kho- daganj near Fathagarh which was seven years in pro- gress was built at his exponce for Rs 70,000, and finished in July, 1836 A. D. He was dismissed from his post in 1832 A. D., which was again restored to him on the accession of Muhammad 'Ali Shah in 1837 A. D. After this he Uved only a few months and died in December, 1837 A. D. Mahdi, Imam, t5'>t'*' surnamed Abfi'l Kasim Muhammad, the last of the twelve Imams who are held in the highest veneration by the Muhammadans. The first of these was 'Ali, and the last Mahdi, the son of Hasan 'Askari who was the eleventh Imam. He was born at Sarmanrai in Baghdad on Friday the 29th of July, 869 A. D., 15th Sha'ban, 255 A.
