After all, a difference of conclusion in regard to the nu- merical strength of the Russians on the Alma is not a mat- ter of so much import as might at first sight be imagined ; for on the one hand, it must be acknowledged by ail that the allies, French, English, and Turks, were together in numbers exceeding those of the Russians bj more than a third ; and on the other hand, it is equally plain that in each of the several combats which took place between the Russians and the English, on the day of the Alma, our people were largely outnumbered.
