Of the English infantry, a large proportion was still kept apart to guard the ravines on our left ; i" and the remainder of them, with a strength some- what .short of 3000, were in the centre, some occupying the Home Eidge, and all the rest fight- ing in front of it. A large proportion of them had belonged to the number of what we called the ' spent forces,' but the efficiency of these scattered soldiery had been in a great measure restored by collecting them into bodies com- manded each by some officer ; and having been now supplied with cartridges, the men were for the most part in good humour and willing enough
