The Poem of The Troubadour is founded
upon an ancient custom of Provence, according
to which a festival was held, and the minstrel
who bore away the prize from his competitors
was rewarded, by the lady chosen to preside,
with a Golden Violet. It is hardly necessary
to say, that this makes only the conclusion of the
tale, —all the earlier parts being given to chivalrous
adventure and to description characteristic
of the age.
