106 STAT. 3066 PUBLIC LAW 102-486—OCT. 24, 1992 or regenerate such devices, for use as a source of power for an electric motor vehicle and any other associated equipment; (2) the term "associated equipment" means equipment necessarv for the regeneration, refueling, or recharging of batteries or other forms of electric energy used to power an electric motor vehicle and, in the case otelectric-hybrid vehicles, such term includes nonpetroleum-related equipment necessary for, and solely related to, the demonstration of sudi vehicles; (3) the term "electric motor vehicle* means a motor vehicle primarily powered by an electric motor that draws current irom rechargeable storage batteries, fuel cells, photovoltaic arravs, or other sources of electric current and may include an electric-hybrid vehicle; and (4) the term "electric-hybrid vehicle" means vehicle primarily powered by an electric motor that draws current from rechargeable storage batteries, fuel cells, or other sources of electric current and also relies on a nonelectric source of power that also operates on or is capable of operating on a nonelectrical source of power. 42 USC 13436. SEC. 2026. RENEWABLE HYDROGEN ENERGY. (a) PROGRAM DIRECTION. —The Secretary shall conduct a 5- year program, in accordance with sections 3001 and 3002 of this Act, on renewable hydrogen energy systems. Such program shall be conducted in accordance with the Spark M. Matsimaga Hydrogen Research, Development, and Demonstration Act of 1990 (Public Law 101--566), to supplement ongoing activities of a similar nature at the Department oi Energy, including— (1) at least one program to generate hydrogen from renewable energy sources; (2) atleast one program to assess the feasibility of existing natural gas pipelmes carrying hydrogen gas, including experimentation if needed, with a goal of determining those components of the natural gas distnbution system that would have to be modified to carry— (A) more than 20 percent hydrogen mixed with natural gas; and (B) pure hydrogen gas; (3) at least one program to develop a hydrogen storage system suitable for electric motor vehicles powered by fuel cells, with emphasis on— (A) improved metal hydride hydrogen storage; (B) activated carbon-Based hydrogen storage; (C) high pressure compressed hydrogen; or (D) other novel hydrogen storage tecnniques; (4) at least one program to develop a fuel cell suitable to power an electric motor vehicle; and (5) such other programs as the Secretary considers necessary to carry out this section. (b) PROPOSALS. —Within 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall solicit proposals for conducting activities under this section. 42 USC 13437. SEC. 2027. ADVANCED DIESEL EMISSIONS PROGRAM. (a) PROGRAM DIRECTION.— The Secretary shall initiate a 5-year program, in accordance with sections 3001 and 3002 of this Act, on diesel engine combustion and engine systems, related advanced materials, and i^els and lubricants to reduce emissions oxides of
