Subtitle A—Officer Personnel Policy SEC. 501. TEMPORARY AUTHORITY FOR RECALL OF RETIRED AVI- ATORS. (a) AUTHORITY.— During the retired aviator recall period, the Secretary of a military department may recall to active duty any retired officer having expertise as an aviator to fill staff positions normally filled by active duty aviators. Any such recall may only be made with the consent of the officer recalled. (b) LIMITATION.— No more than a total of 500 officers may be on active duty at any time under subsection (a). (c) TERMINATION.— Each officer recalled to active duty under subsection (a) during the retired aviator recall period shall be released from active duty not later than one year after the end of such period. (d) WAIVERS. — Officers recalled to active duty under subsection (a) shall not be counted for purposes of section 668 or 690 of title 10, United States Code. (e) RETIRED AVIATOR RECALL PERIOD.— For purposes of this section, the retired aviator recall period is the period beginning on October 1, 1999, and ending on September 30, 2002. (f) REPORT.— Not later than March 31, 2002, the Secretary Deadline, of Defense submit to the Committee on Armed Services of the Senate and the Committee on Armed Services of the House of
