‘ ( c ) (1) F o r the armed forces under the j urisdiction of the Sec - retary of D efense, the Secretary may wai v e the initial p eriod of re q uired service otherwise established pursuant to subsection (a) in the case of the initial appointment of a commissioned officer in a critically short health professional specialty specified by the Secretary for purposes of this subsection . ‘‘( 2 ) T he minimum period of obligated service for an officer under a waiver under this subsection shall be the greater of — ‘‘( A ) two years
or ‘‘( B ) in the case of an officer who has accepted an accession bonus or e x ecuted a contract or agreement for the multiyear receipt of special pay for service in the armed forces, the period of obligated service specified in such contract or agreement. ’ ’. SEC. 50 6 .E X PANSION OF AUTHORITY FOR REENLISTMENT OF OFFI- CERS IN THEIR FORMER ENLISTED GRADE. (a) REGULAR AR MY .—Section 3 25 8 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— (1) in subsection (a)— (A) by stri k ing ‘‘a Reserve officer’’ and inserting ‘‘an officer’’; and (B) by striking ‘‘a temporary appointment’’ and inserting ‘‘an appointment’’; and (2) in subsection (b)— (A) in paragraph (1), by striking ‘‘a Reserve officer’’ and inserting ‘‘an officer’’; and (B) in paragraph (2), by striking ‘‘the Reserve commis- sion’’ and inserting ‘‘the commission’’. (b) REGULAR A I RF O R C E.—Section 8258 of such title is amended— (1) in subsection (a)— (A) by striking ‘‘a reserve officer’’ and inserting ‘‘an officer’’; and (B) by striking ‘‘a temporary appointment’’ and inserting ‘‘an appointment’’; and (2) in subsection (b)— (A) in paragraph (1), by striking ‘‘a Reserve officer’’ and inserting ‘‘an officer’’; and (B) in paragraph (2), by striking ‘‘the Reserve commis- sion’’ and inserting ‘‘the commission’’.
