Also of the Egyptian levee, beginning at a point on the Des Moines River, in the county of Clark, State of Missouri, running along the south bank of said river to or near the Mississippi River at Alexandria, thence along the west bank of said river to terminus of said Egyptian levee, and estimate the cost of raising and strengthening said levee so as to conline the water to theriver and thereby deepen the channel and _ _ _ _ improve navigation. · cQ{y;]:*,g§f‘ R"" Improving Mississippi River from Head of Passes to the mouth of Fw! ar rm. it the Ohio River, including salaries, clerical, office, traveling, and mismmm ew. cellaneous expenses of the Mississippi River Commission: Continuing improvement, six hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars, which sum shall be expended under the direction of. the Secretary of War, in accordance with the plans, specifications, and recommendations of the Mississippi River Commission, as approved by the Chief of Engineers, for the general improvement of the river, for the building and repairing of levees, and for surveys, including the continuation of the survey between Head of Passes and the head waters of the river, such improvement, surveys, building and repairs of levees to be made and carried on in such manner as in their opinion shall best improve navi- _ gation and promote the interests of commerce at all stages of the river: gf;§‘rjgQ,,_ Provided, That on and after the passage of this Act additional contracts may be entered into by the Secretary of YVar for such materials and work as may be necessary to carry on continuously the plans of the Mississippi River Commission as aforesaid, or said materials may be purchased and work done otherwise than by contract, to be paid for as appropriations may from time to time be made by law, not exceeding in the aggregate eight million three hundred and seventy-five thousand timiemuus. dollars, exclusive of the amount herein appropriated: Provided furtlier, That for the fiscal year ending June thirtieth, eighteen hundred and ninety-seven, said contracts, and materials purchased, and work done otherwise than by contract shall not exceed the sum of six hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars, and thereafter shall not exceed the sum of two million five hundred and eighty-three thousand three hundred and thirty-three dollars annually for the three years beginning July Y>¤··ls·* *¤>··¤·· ~¤¤·· first, eighteen hundred and ninety-seven: Provided further, That the money hereby appropriated and authorized to be expended in pursuance of said contracts, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be expended in the construction of suitable dredge boats and other devices and appliances, and in the maintenance and operation of the same, with the view of ultimately obtaining and maintaining anavigable channel from Cairo down, not less than two hundred and fifty feet in width and nine feet in depth at all periods of the year except when m·.-crm; banks. navigation is closed by ice: Proridedfurther, That of the sum hereby appropriated and authorized to be expended, the sum of sixty-four thou- _ _ sand dollars shall be expended in the rectification of the banks at Green- G"°°““°·“*"· ville, Mississippi, and sixty-four thousand dollars in the rectification
