Ch. 324. 1899. 927 period not to exceed twenty days, and the amounting ofucers of the yifm ¤H·>W¤¤<=¤· Treasury are hereby authorized to allow per diem pay to such special °° °gt°°' agents while remaining at the seat of Government under order and direction of the Secretary of the Interior for a period not exceeding twenty days at any one time during the fiscal years eighteen hundred and ninety-eight and eighteen hundred and ninety-nine; lor pay of employees not otherwise provided for, and for pay of the five special agents, at two thousand dollars per annum each, forty thousand dollars: _ Provided, That hereafter each special agent, supervisor of schools, or Prom"- dm, . other official charged with the investigation of Indian agencies and I..li:°"°° m°°°r schools, in the pursuit of his official duties shall have power to administer oaths and to examine on oath all onicers and persons employed in the Indian service, and all such other persons as may be deemed necessary _ and proper. To enable the Secretary of the Interior to employ practical farmers P¤¤¢i<==¤ f¤¤·¤¤¤r~- and practical stockmen in addition to the agency farmers now employed, ‘ at wages not exceeding sixty-five dollars each per month, to superintend . and direct farming and stock raising among such Indians as are making eiiort for self-support, sixty-tive thousand dollars: Provided, That no emot. person shall be employed as such farmer or stockman who has not been ,,f§,°,,’{;§,§,}{°f,§‘ gfjj at least two years immediately previous to such employment practically ins fer mv y•¤r¤ rw engaged in the occupation of farming within the State or Territory, or "°"" adjoining State or Territory, where such agency is located, and where practicable competent Indians shall be given the preference. For services of officers, at fifteen dollars per month each, and pri- I¤•“¤¤ P·>li¤¤· vates, at ten dollars per month each, of Indian police, to be employed in maintaining order and proh1'biting illegal traffic in liquor on the several Indian reservations and within the Territory of Alaska} in the discretion of the Secretary of the Interior, for the purchase o equipments, and for the purchase of rations for policemen at nonration agencies, one hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars. For compensation of judges of Indian courts, twelve thousand live mms" of I¤¤i¤¤ hundred and forty dollars. ` To enable the Secretary of the Interior to employ suitable persons M¤tr¤¤¤_ w teach asvnatrons to teach Indian girls in housekeeping and other household h°““°l‘°°P“‘g‘ duties, at a rate not to exceed sixty dollars per month, and for furnishing necessary equipments, fifteen thousand dollars. For pure vaccine matter and vaccination of Indians, one thousand V¤¤ci¤¤¢i<>¤· dollars. To pay the expense of purchasing goods and supplies for the Indian { S¤pp1i•¤.¤¤¤¤g¤pn- . Service, and pay of necessary employees; advertising, at rates not "g* °‘°‘ exceeding regular commercial rates; inspection, and all other expenses connected therewith, including telegraphing, forty-five thousand dollars. For necessary expenses of transportation of such goods, provisions, rmnpcmmn. and other articles for the various tribes of Indians provided for by this · Act, including pay and expenses of transportation agents and rent of warehouses, three hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. For expenses of the commission of citizens, serving without compen· omm ¤¤m¤m¤1¤¤. sation, appointed by the President under the provisions of the Act of Vol.18,p.40.
