Cg.102. 1929. maps, reports, documents, plans, specifications, manuscripts, news- papers (foreign and domestic) not exceeding $4,000, and all other publications, traveling expenses of officers and employees, ice and drinking water for office purposes, and all other incidental expenses not included in the foregoing, to be expended under the direction of the Secretary of Commerce, and under the following heads Promoting commerce in Europe and other areas : Investigations in Europe and other areas for the promotion and development of the foreign commerce of the United States, $865,763 ; Promoting commerce i n Latin America : I nve st ig ati on s in La ti n Ame rica for th e pr omot ion and deve lop ment of the fore ign com - merce of the United States, $490,000 ; Promoting commerce in the Far East : Investigations in the Far East for the promotion and development of the foreign commerce of the United States, $370,000 ; Promoting commerce in Africa : Investigations in Africa for the promotion and development of the foreign commerce of the United States, $106,000 ; District and cooperative office service : For all expenses necessary to operate and maintain district and cooperative offices, including per- sonal services in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, rent out- side of th e Dist rict o f Colu mbia, traveli ng and subsi stence expen ses of officers and employees, purchase of furniture and equipment, stationery and supplies, typewriti ng, adding, and comp uting machi nes, a ccesso ries a nd rep airs, purchas e of m aps, b ooks o f refe r- ence and periodicals, reports, documents, plans, specifications, manu- scripts, not exceeding $1,200 for newspapers, both foreign and domestic, for which payment may be made in advance, and all other publ icatio ns nec essary for t he pro motion of the comme rcial intere sts of t he Uni ted St ates, and al l othe r incid ental expens es not inclu ded in t he for egoing , $620 ,000 : Provi ded, That the Secretary of Com- merce may require as a condition for the opening of a new office or th e continu ation of an existi ng offic e that co mmercial organizat ions in the district affected provide suitable quarters without cost to the Government or at rentals at lower than prevailing rates . The Secre- tary may, at his discr etion, refus e to op en a n ew off ice or conti nue an existing office where such assistance from local commercial organi- zations is not provided ; Enforcement of China Trade Act : To care y out the provisions of the Act entitled "China Trade Act, 1922" (U . S . C., p . 367, sees . 141-162), including personal services in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, traveling and subsistence expenses of officers and employees, purchase of furniture and equipment, stationery and sup- plies, typewriting, adding and computing machines, accessories and repairs, purchase of books of reference and periodicals, reports, docu- ments, plans, specifications, maps, manuscripts, and all other publi- cations ; rent outside the District of Columbia ; ice and drinking water for office purposes, and all necessary expenses not included in the foregoing, $30,800 : Provided, That payment in advance for tele- phone and other similar services under this appropriation is hereby authorized ; Export industries : To enable the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce to investigate and report on domestic as well as foreign prob lems r elatin g to t he pro ductio n, dist ributi on, an d mark eting, in so far as they relate to the important export industries of the United St ates, inc ludin g per sonal ser vices in t he D istri ct of Colu mbia , traveling and subsistence expenses of officers and employees, purchase of furniture and equipment, stationery and supplies, typewriting, adding, and computing machines, accessories and repairs, books of reference and periodicals, reports, documents, plans, specifications, 1117 Classification .
