PUBLIC LAW 99-38-MAY 15, 1985 Public Law 99-38 99th Congress Joint Resolution

May 15, 1985 [S.J. Res. 53]

To authorize and request the President to designate the month of June 1985 as "Youth Suicide Prevention Month".

Whereas the youth of society represent the hope for the future; Whereas the rate of youth suicide has increased more than threefold in the last two decades; Whereas over five thousand young Americans took their lives last year, many more attempted suicide, and countless families were affected; Whereas youth suicide is a phenomenon which must be addressed by a concerned society; and Whereas youth suicide is a national problem which can only be solved through the combined efforts of individuals, families, communities, organizations, and government to educate society: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the month of June 1985 is designated as "Youth Suicide Prevention Month" and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the Governors of the several States, the chief officials of local governments, and the people of the United States to observe such month with appropriate programs and activities.
