BIRDS In addition to the 1 10 residents and summer migrants that breed in the county, the following birds formerly nested regularly, but have ceased to do so subsequently to 1840. The date after the name is that of the last authen- ticated nest : Marsh harrier (1855) Hobby (1862) Hen harrier (1841 ? 1903-5) Roseate tern (after 1854) Rough-legged buzzard (about 1859) Black-headed gull (about 1845) Kite (1842) The following species have nested at least once in the county since the middle of the century : Yellow wagtail (frequently) Spotted crake (often) Hawfinch (once) Turnstone (more than once, Scilly) ? Hoopoe (once) Redshank (once) Turtle-dove (once, Scilly) Woodcock (once) Quail (often) Among the accidental visitors to the county there are, as previously mentioned, no less than eighteen American species, namely : Red-winged starling American stint Yellow-billed cuckoo Buff-breasted sandpiper Hawk owl Bartram's sandpiper Little green heron Solitary sandpiper American bittern Yellow shank Surf scoter Red-breasted snipe Killdeer plover Esquimaux curlew Pectoral sandpiper Bonaparte's gull Bonaparte's sandpiper Ivory gull Apart from introduced species there arc thirteen birds that have occurred in Devonshire and not in Cornwall: Nightingale Nutcracker Red spotted bluethroat Buff-backed heron Black-headed warbler Red-breasted goose Rufous warbler American green-winged teal Alpine accentor Caspian tern Crested-tit ? Great black-headed gull Serin Of these the nightingale is a summer migrant, the crested-tit a casual and all the others accidental visitors. The little egret has occurred in Devon- shire, and may have to be added to the above list, as there is some doubt about its appearance in Cornwall.
