FISHES The data from which the present list is drawn are derived from three sources : Boys' Fishes of Sandwich^ ^792, the handbook to Dover, prepared for the meeting of the British Association in 1899, and con- taining a list of the fishes, by Mr. Sydney Webb, and Dr. J. Murie's Thames 'Estuary Sea Fisheries, part i., 1903. The names of freshwater species are prefixed with an asterisk ; two asterisks denote occurrence in both fresh and salt water. In 1 801 three were taken off Margate, this being the first record of tunnies on the Eng- lish coast. Others have since come ashore on the coast of Kent.
