To take them both, and let them live
  With him and dear mamma.

Papa replies: "My dear, I think
  We've boys enough already;
But we will take the little girl—
  A play-mate for our Freddy."

O, must these little orphans part?
  What will the poor boy do?
He hesitates a moment, then
  He says, "we'll take the two!

"For 'twould be very hard, to part
  The sister from her brother;
Poor little friendless ones, who now
  So dearly love each other.

"Mamma will not consent, I'm sure,
  These orphans thus to part,
There's room enough to hold them both,
  In her warm, loving heart."

Fred runs at once to ask mamma,
  If she will be a mother
To this dear little girl and boy—
  The sister and the brother.
