Philanthropist; b. Little Valley, N.Y.; dau. Lyman and Emeliza (Hull) Culver; grad. Randolph Acad., N.Y., 1853; established private school at Sycamore, Ill., 1853; principal primary school and teacher in grammar and high schools, Chicago, 1854-61; matron Military Hospital at Murfreesboro, Tenn., under the Sanitary Commission, 1863; entered real estate business with her relative, Charles J. Hull, of Chicago, 1868, and after his death, in 1895, built and endowed the Hull Biological Laboratories of the University of Chicago; also founded the Helen Culver Fund for Race Psychology, 1910. Trustee of Hull House Ass'n from its organization in 1898. Favors woman suffrage.
