Films of the historical fiction genre; that are set in a (real) time period that existed before the film was made. Works are listed here alongside the time period in which they are set.

  • A Christmas Carol (1910) — Set in mid-19th century England (to stay true to the novel on which it was based, which was actually written during that time)
  • Frankenstein (1910) — Set in the early 19th century (to stay true to the novel on which it was based, which was actually written during that time)
  • Their One Love (1915) — Set during the American Civil War
  • The Life of Abraham Lincoln (1915) — Set in various periods of the 19th century, following Abraham Lincoln's years in politics
  • Oliver Twist (1922) — Set in mid-19th century England (to stay true to the novel on which it was based, which was actually written during that time)
  • The Fighting Coward (1924) — Set in the 1840s in the US state of Mississippi, as was the play Magnolia on which it was based
