PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 228

SETTING JULY 27, 1973, AS THE DATE FOR THE HOLDING OF A NATIONAL REFERENDUM FOR BARANGAYS (CITIZENS ASSEMBLIES)

Whereas, it is imperative that the people's views on current national issues be ascertained periodically and as often as possible;

Now, therefore, I, Ferdinand E. Marcos, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers in me vested by the Constitution as Commander-in-Chief of all the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and pursuant to Proclamation No. 1081 dated September 21, 1972 and General Order No. 1 dated September 22, 1972, do hereby set July 27, 1973 as a date for the holding of a nationwide referendum for all the Barangays (Citizens Assemblies) throughout the country.

The Commission on Elections shall, after consultations with all sectors of the nation, determine the issue or issues to be submitted for resolution in the referendum.

The Commission on Elections shall promulgate the rules and regulations necessary to implement this Decree.

This Decree shall take effect immediately.

Done in the City of Manila this 26th day of June, in the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and seventy-three.
