THE WHITE HOUSE

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1969

PRESIDENT'S SCENARIO:

At 10:30 a. m. you and the First Lady will be escorted from your office to the east end of the Fish Room where you will be met by Dr. Walter B. Frommeyer, Jr., President of the American Heart Association.

With Dr. Frommeyer will be Dr. Paul Dudley White, this year's recipient of the Distinguished Volunteer Service Award; Dr. Irvine H. Page, this year's recipient of the Heart of the Year Award; and Mr. William F. Laporte, National Chairman of the 1969 Heart Fund.

Dr. Frommeyer first will give the Distinguished Volunteer Service Award to Mrs. Nixon with the request that she make the presentation to Dr. White on behalf of the American Heart Association. Dr. Frommeyer· then will give you the Heart of the Year Award with the request that you make the presentation to Dr. Page on behalf of the American Heart Association.

The Distinguished Volunteer Service Award (to be presented by Mrs. Nixon) is an annual award to the individual who is the "nation's outstanding Heart Fund Volunteer."

Dr. Paul Dudley White, a pioneer in cardiology, was a founder of the American Heart Association, a past President, a leading advocate of independent voluntary giving, and the single most influential spokesman for international cooperation in this field. The Heart of the Year Award to be presented by you is an annual award to the distinguished American who, despite a history of cardiovascular disease has continued to make important contributions to society. It is recommended that you read the following inscription from the plaque:

"Through his faith, courage, and achievement in meeting the personal challenge of heart disease, Dr. Irving H. Page has set a magnificent example and inspired people everywhere with hope and with the determination to conquer our nation's leading health enemy."

Dr. Irving H. Page, who headed the National Diet-Heart Study, is one of the world's leading research scientists. He is currently Director Emeritus of Research for the Cleveland(Ohio) Clinic Foundation.

You will make brief concluding remarks following which you and Mrs. Nixon will be escorted back to your office.

NOTE:
Mrs. Page, Mrs. White, Mrs. Laporte and supporting personnel of the American Heart Association will be in attendance.

There will be full press coverage.
