This is a letter, the contents of which have been the occasion of some controversy. It is reprinted, as an, unofficial translation from an official source, from

The English errors here - 1st para "me address" and 8th para "you efforts" come from there and are not transcription errors.

Date

I changed the date, because sources from that time clearly mention 27 December 2000. These sources should be regarded more reliable than those of years later:

• CNN: Mideast summit in Egypt called off: The White House received a letter from Arafat on Wednesday (27 December)
• AFP: Palestinians cannot respond to US plan without clarification: Erakat: (27 December) It's true that President (Palestinian leader) Arafat sent a letter to President Clinton to explain to him the Palestinian position vis-a-vis the peace process
• RTÉ: Arafat and Mubarak hold "constructive" talks on peace proposals: (28 December) In a letter to the White House yesterday, the Palestinian leadership expressed its reservations about the proposals
