Discrepancy[edit]

I have a printed copy of this story, and the ending in my book (The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories, unabridged, Dover Thrift Editios, 1992, ISBN 0-486-27069-6) concludes the story as follows:

"Well, thish-yer Smiley had a yaller one-eyed cow that didn't have no tail, only just a short stump like a bannanner, and—"
However, lacking both time and inclination, I did not wait to hear about the afflicted cow, but took my leave.

However, this Wikisource page writes:

"Well, thish-yer Smiley had a yaller one-eyed cow that didn't have no tail, only jest a short stump like a bannanner, and ––"
"Oh! hang Smiley and his afflicted cow!" I muttered, good-naturedly, and bidding the old gentleman good-day, I departed.

Any ideas on the discrepancy? Kane5187 20:35, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
