  1. சாகத்திரிகிறான் சண்டாளன் சாப்பிட்டுத்திரிகிறான் பெண்டாளன்.
    The vicious wanders about famished; the householder is in the enjoyment of plenty.
  2. சாகத் துணிந்தவனுக்குச் சமுத்திரம் நீச்சு.
    The sea is but swimming depth to one that braves death.
  3. சாகப் பொழுதன்றி வேகப் பொழுது இல்லை.
    There is time to die, but none to be consumed by fire.
  4. சாகிறவரையில் வைத்தியன் விடான், செத்தாலும் விடான் பஞ்சாங்கக்காரன்.
    A physician will not leave one till death, an astrologer will not leave even then.
  5. சாகிறவரையில் மருந்து கொடுக்க வேண்டும்.
    Medicine must be given to the very last.
  6. சாகிறதுபோல் இருந்து வியாதி தீருகிறதும் உண்டு.
    They who were apparently dying have recovered.

    For a dog to get on the roof of a house is regarded as an omen of some great calamity, and therefore the dog should be destroyed.

    The mud of a ditch and a rival wife are alike.
  14. சாக்கடைப் புழு என்றாலும் சக்களத்தியை வெல்லப்போகாது.
    Though despicable as a worm in a ditch, it is difficult to overcome a rival wife.
  15. சாக்கடைப் புழுவிற்குப் போக்கிடம் எங்கே?
    Where shall the worm that was born and bred in the ditch go?
  16. சாக்கும் போக்கும் ஏற்காது ஐயன் முன்.
    Excuses are of no avail before God.

    Is it the result of excuse, planetary influence or the matron’s word?

    The artful cat left the curds, and licked the chatty.
  42. சாத்தானி குடுமிக்கும் சந்நியாசி பூணூலுக்கும் முடி போடுகிறாய்.
    Thou art tying the knot of Sattàni’s hair to the sacred thread of the religious mendicant.
  43. சாஸ்திரம் பொய் என்றால் கிரகணத்தைப் பார்.
    If the shasters are false, look at the eclipse.
  44. சாஸ்திரம் பார்த்துப் பெண்ணைக் கொள் கோத்திரம் பார்த்துப் பெண்ணைக் கொடு.
    Take a wife after consulting the shasters and give a daughter in marriage after ascertaining the character of the family into which she is going.

    The family that regards not the shasters has an ocean of wealth, whilst the one that regards them is in poverty.

    He who is learned in the shasters is himself money.
  47. சாந்துப்பெட்டி பாம்புப்பெட்டி ஆயிற்று.
    The scent box has become a box of snakes.

    Can you dandle a still-born child?
  49. சாப்பிள்ளைப் பெறுவதிலும் தான்சாவது நலம்.
    Better die than bear a still-born child.
  50. சாப்பிள்ளைப் பெற்றவளுக்குச் சந்தோஷம் வருமா?
    Will she have joy who has borne a still-born child?
  51. சாப்பிள்ளை பெற்றாலும் மருத்துவிச்சிகூலி தப்பாது.
    Though a still-born child is brought forth, there is no escape from the midwife’s fee.
  52. சாமி வரம் கொடுத்தாலும் பூசாரி இடம் கொடுக்கமாட்டான்.
    Though God may bestow the gift, the priest will not suffer you to enjoy it.
  53. சாமைப்பயிரும் சக்கிலியப்பெண்ணும் சமைந்தால் தெரியும்.
    Sámi rice when boiled, and a girl of the shoe-maker class when matured, appear to advantage.
  54. சாம்பலைக் கிண்டி கோழி தானே விலங்கு இட்டுக்கொண்டதுபோல.
    As a hen fettered herself whilst scratching a rubbish heap.
  55. சாம்பலைத் தின்று வெண்ணெய்யைப் பூசினதுபோல.
    Like rubbing the mouth with butter after having eaten ashes.
  56. சாராயத்தை வார்த்துப் பூராயத்தைக் கேளு.
    Pour in liquor and draw out the secret.

  57. சாலாய் வனைந்தால் என்ன சட்டியாய் வனைந்தால் என்ன?
    What matters it whether the potter makes a large or a small chatty?
  58. சாலோடே தண்ணீர் சாய்த்துக் குடித்தாலும் தாய் வார்க்கும் தண்ணீர் தாகம் தெளியும்.
    Though one may drink water out of a large pot, the water that one’s mother pours out allays one’s thirst.
  59. சாவாமற் கற்பதே கல்வி, பிறர் இடத்தில் ஏகாமல் உண்பதே ஊண்.
    That is learning which teaches us to escape death, and that is food which is obtained without dependence on others.
  60. சான்றோர் இல்லாச் சபை குறவர் சேரி.
    A community without learned men is a hamlet of mountaineers.
