Bulgaria

Gabe, Dora. Born in the Dobrudja. Has achieved great success in depicting the life of the peasants in the Dobrudja and their customs.

Karabyitcheff, Anguel. He is one of the youngest of the Bulgarian prose writers. He is only twenty-three. Born in a village near Lerino, the old capital of Bulgaria. By profession a chemist, Karabyitcheff analyzes successfully the souls of men. He published his first poems in various Bulgarian reviews and then short stories, including The Stone Bridge of the Rossitza, and The Eagles, which won for him last year a prize of 10,000 frs. from the Bulgarian Ministry of Education.

Denmark

Rode, Edith. The wife of the poet Helge Rode. She has just celebrated her twenty-fifth anniversary as a Danish writer. Author: 1926: Kvinde, Hertes Baby, Hjerter.

Adamson, Hendrik. Writer of prose and poetry. Born in 1891. Published in 1926 a volume of short stories, Roheline Sisalik (The Green Lizard).

Rhot, Richard. Born in 1891. Novelist and short story writer. Published in 1925 the novel Uksindus (Solitude) and the book of short stories, Neli Juttu (4 Short Stories). Vilme Kevad.

Tammsaarv, A. H. Viiul, Naistevorgutaja, Poialpoiss.

Tuglas, Friedbert. Writer and critic. Born in 1886. The director of the most important Esthonian literary magazine, Looming (Creation). The greatest Esthonian short story writer. Poeet ja Idoot, Popi i Huhnu, The Horror in the Forest. Has published six volumes of short stories. In 1925, Hingede randamine (Metamorphoses).

Wilde, Edward. Born in 1865. The most fertile of the Esthonian writers. Spent 12 years abroad as a refugee, mostly in the United States. Has published a trilogy based on Esthonian history, as well as numerous plays. In 1925, on the occasion of his 69th birthday, he wrote the short story, Asunik Wolterhausen (The Colonist Wolterhausen).

Haanpaa, Pentti. Born in 1905. Won the Finnish literary prize with his short story, Maantieta Pitkin.

Haarla, Lauri. Born in 1890. Author: Saaretun Nakyja, Sophonisba, Onni Maallinin, Hanuumanin tytar, Lemmin Polka, Synti, Uskottomuus, Nuorten Tuomio.

Jotuni, Maria. Born in 1880. Author: Suhteita, Rakkauttan, Kun on tun teet, Arkielamaa, Martinin Rikos, Vanha Koti, Miehen Kylkiluu, Savu-Uhri, Kultainen Vasikka.

Lehtonen, Joel. Born in 1881. Author: Paholaisen Viulu, Mataleena, Villi, Myrtti Ja Alppiruusu, Punainen Mylly, Kerran Kesalla, Kuolleet Omenapuut, Putkinotko, Rakastunut Rampa, Korpi Ja Puutarhan Sorron Lapset, Onnen Poika, Markkinoilta, Puolikuum Alla.

Mann, Klaus. The son of Thomas Mann. Enjoyed great success with first book of short stories entitled “Vor dem Leben.” An ultra modernist.

Ponten, Josef. Considered one of the greatest modern German short story writers. Die Uhr von Gold, Der Meister, Die Insel, Die Bockreiter.

Thiess, Frank. Author, Die Verdammten, Das Gesicht des Jahrhunderts, Angelika Ten Swaart, Der Tod von Falern, Der Leibhaftige, Der Kampf mit dem Engel.

Greece

Xenopoulo, Gregoire. He was born at Constantinople in 1867, but he spent his childhood at Zantiote, the native isle of his parents. Gregoire Xenopoulo is a very prolific writer, who has won equal success in all branches of literature. His best-known novels are The Red Rock, Photine Sandré, The Woman with Three Appearances, Isabella, Stella Violenti, The Evil Way, Therese Varma-Dacosta. He has drawn most of his dramas from his novels, and he has written a great number of short stories and sketches, which have been published in periodicals and newspapers at Athens.

Holland

Hopman, Fritz. Born in Amsterdam, July 14, 1877. Studied in London and later in Amsterdam and Groningen. In 1910 he became attached to the staff of the Arnhemsche Courant. In 1912 he returned to London and in 1914 became professor of English at the University of Leyden. Author of, In Het Voorbijgaan, De Preeftijd, Van de Liefde die Vrij weu zijn, Nachtnaken, The Bearer of the Message.

Hungary

Babeti, Mihaly (Michael). Born in 1883. Became famous about the same time as Ady whom he joined in the leadership of the Nyugat, the celebrated post-war Hungarian review. At first he devoted himself entirely to poetry, when he revealed to the public the great artist and dreamer he was; furthermore being a scholar he has a sound knowledge of the habits and general trend of thought of the different cliques in Hungary. His style changed after the war, his becoming more human, his lyrics more heartrending and his expressions stronger. Besides his own works he has translated Sophocles, Dante, Shakespeare, Baudelaire, Verlaine and others. The following are a few outstanding titles: The Leaves of Iris’s Crown, The Vale of Unrest, The Calif of the Storks, The Christmas Madonna, Virgil Timai’s Son, The Castle of Cards, Stories and Novels.

de Bartoky, Josef. Born in Bekscsaba in 1865. In 1918, undersecretary of Agriculture. Author, Oszi Istek (Winter Evenings), Telben (In Winter), Mecsvilag (The Light of a Candle), Szivarvany (The Rainbow).

Herczeg, Ferencz. Born in 1863 at Versecz. The greatest living Hungarian author. Author, Fenn es Lent (Up and Down), Poganyok (The Pagans), Ocskay Brigaderos (Brigadier Ocskay), Az elet Kapuja (The Door of Life).

Kosztolanyi, Desire. Born in 1885 at Subottiza (Szabadka) on the Serbo-Hungarian frontier. The representative of the impressionist movement. Author, A szegeny kis gyermek panaszai (Complaints of a Poor Little Boy), Negy fal kozett (Between Four Walls), Magia (Magi), Kenyer es bor (Bread and Wine), Bolondok (The Lunatics), Bela az egyugyu (Bela the Fool).

de Pekar, Julius. Born in Debrecen in 1867. A prisoner during the Communist revolution. The president of the Feher Haz (the anti-bolshevist society). Author of more than 65 books. Akom the Eternal.

Zoltam, Ambrus. Born in Debrecen in 1861. The great disciple of French literature in Hungary. Autumn’s Sun.

Latvia

Akuraters, Janis. Born in 1876. He has made his mark in Lettish literature as a novelist as well as a lyrical poet and a dramatist. For his dramas he seeks his stuff largely in ancient Lettish lore and has dramatized the old Lettish and Livland heroes Viesturs, Kaupo. . . . His latest collection of short stories is called Erosa cilts (Eros), from which the tale Death is chosen.

Brigader, Anna. Born in 1869. In 1922 she celebrated the jubilee of her literary activity and was made the recipient of many tokens of popular favor, notably of an estate named “Spriditis,” after the name of the hero of her best-known play. While she has written novels and verse of considerable merit her chief reputation rests on her dramatic works: Ilga. Heteras mantojums. Spriditis (fairy tale). In her Dzelzs dure (The Iron Fist) she gives some remarkable descriptions of conditions in Riga in 1918–19, during the German occupation. Author, The Night Journey.

Zarins, K. Robert. Considered the best short story by the Lettish Literary Committee.

Kuprine, Alexander. Born in 1870 in Narovtchak, Penza. When quite young, he was sent to military school and in 1890 became a second lieutenant in a Dnieper regiment. He gave up the military life four years later, to devote himself to writing. His carefulness and exactitude reminds one of the old Flemish and Dutch painters. The greatest of the Russian emigré writers. Author, The Duel, My First Born, The Ditch, The Bog, The Song of the Cricket, In the Heart of the Woods, Olessia, The Telegraphist, Moloch, Captain Rybnikov, A Coward, The Jewess, The Wedding, The Shulamite, Measles, Thunder, etc.

Babel, T. The Story of My Dovecot. Babel is one of the best of the new school of writers in Bolshevik Russia.

Spain

Mengotti, Enrique. Born in 1898 in Madrid, he is considered one of the most characteristic short story writers.

Sweden

Siwertz Per Sigfrid. Born in Stockholm the 24th of January, 1882: graduated at the Upsal University, then devoted his whole time to literary work. His first efforts, poems, are greatly appreciated in Sweden for the minute accuracy of the descriptions and the well-chosen expressions. Leaving poetry aside Siwertz gave his attention to novel writing, which is to this day his usual mode of expression. Margot, 1906, the first of a series of short stories, depicting town life; The Circle, The Brothers of Lake Maelar, 1908; The Old Folk, 1909; The Pirate of Maelar, 3rd edition, 1911; A Loafer, 4th edition, 1914; Grown-up Children, 1915, are among his most valuable works.

Switzerland

Girard, Pierre. He is a native of Geneva but like many of his compatriots, likewise writers of talent, has spent the greater part of his life in Paris. John's Extraordinary Metamorphosis.
