A'Becket, John Joseph, Ph.D., b. at Portland, Maine, 1849; d. in New York, 20 December, 1911. Education: Portland grammar and high schools; Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts; Woodstock College, Maryland. Became a Catholic 1866; professor of rhetoric and belles lettres in various Jesuit Colleges; for a time member of the Society of Jesus; at one time editorial writer on the "Evening World", New York, London correspondent of the "New York World", and literary critic on the "Literary Digest". Author of short stories and essays contributed to the leading magazines.
