ACETIC ETHER, or ETHYL ACETATE, a colorless, inflammable liquid having the formula CH3.COO.C2H5, or C4H8O2, prepared by the action of sulphuric acid upon a mixture of alcohol and acetic acid. It has a specific gravity of about 0.91 and a specific heat of 0.48 and boils at 171° F., under the ordinary atmospheric pressure. It mixes readily with alcohol and with ether and at ordinary temperatures is soluble in about 17 parts of water. See Esters; Ether.
