Campbell, Captain Alexander, Royal Indian Marine: D.S.O. 1887; C.I.E. 1893; retired, 1894; b. Ballyalton, Co. Down, 1839; 3rd s. of late Wm. Campbell; educ: Belfast Officer Mercantile Marine, 1855-65; entered Bombay Marine, 1865; held various appointments and commands till 1865-85; assisted Abyssinian and Egyptian expeditions; 1885-86, served in Burma expedition as Chief Marine Transport Officer; specially selected as Depty.
