Ramanathan, Ponnambalam, C.M.G. (1889), K.C., Solicitor-General, Ceylon; b. Colombo, Ceylon, 1851; 2nd s. of A. Ponnambala Mudaliar of the Governor’s Gate; m. 1st, Selakshi, d. of E. Nannytami Mudaliar; 2nd, Lelavathi, authoress of Western Pictures for Eastern Students and editoress of her husband’s esoteric’s expositions of the Gospels of St. Mathew and St. John; educ: The Academy, Colombo; and the Presidency College, Madras; enrolled as Advocate, Supreme Court, Ceylon, 1873; unofficial Member, Legislative Council, Ceylon, 1879-92; called, honoris causa, to the Bar (Inner Temple), 1886; acted thrice as Attorney General, Ceylon, 1890, 1897, and 1898; retired, 1906; represented the Ceylon Government at the Diamond Jubilee of late Empress Victoria and was awarded Gold Medal, 1897. Publications: several volumes of Law Reports and cases decided by the Supreme Court of Ceylon, and treatises on Philosophy, Religion, and Ethnology. Address: Sukastan, Colombo, Ceylon.
