MAUNA KEA, mä′o͞o-nȧ kā′ȧ (Hawaiian, white mountain). The highest mountain in Polynesia. It is an extinct volcano occupying the northern and north-central portions of Hawaii, and its height is 13,805 feet (Map: Hawaii, F 4). During most of the year snow lies on its peaks, which are composed of gravel and reddish scoria. Its sides are covered with forests, where wild cattle range and are hunted for their horns, hides, and tallow.
