First published as The Gaunt Stranger in 1925. Subsequently dramatised in collaboration with Sir Gerald Dumaurier as The Ringer. This edition seems to be a reprint of The Gaunt Stranger—probably renamed to take advantage of the success of the play. The Gaunt Stranger was adapted into numerous films, mostly as The Ringer.

Wallace rewrote The Gaunt Stranger incorporating changes made in the play, and published it as The Ringer. The dedication of The Ringer reads: "My dear Gerald, This book is The Gaunt Stranger practically in the form that you and I shaped it for the stage. Herein you will find all the improvements you suggested for The Ringer—which means that this is a better story than The Gaunt Stranger.
