OBITUARY

News reached Emmanuel College, Cambridge, yesterday, that Dr. Evelyn Shirley Shuckburgh had been found dead in a railway carriage whilst travelling to Scotland. He was librarian and late Fellow and assistant tutor of Emmanuel College, and was in college on Monday. He was the son of the rector of Aldborough, Norfolk, and as educated at Ipswich School. He took a first-class in the Classical Tripos of 1866, and was president of the union in 1864. Dr. Shuckburgh was classical lecturer to the non-collegiate students, examiner in classics at Edinburgh and St. Andrews Universities, and in Latin at London University. He was also lecturer in ancient history at University College, London. At one time, from 1874 to 1884, he was master at Eton, and in 1901 was appointed inspector of intermediate schools, Ireland. His publications include :— Translation of Polybius, two volumes; editions of Herodotus, of Ovid, Terrence, Cicero, Cæsar, Horace, and others; Euripide's Bacchae in English verse, lives of Dr. Farmer and Dr. Chaderton, and the history of Emmanuel College. Dr. Shuckburgh was born in 1843. He married Frances Mary, the daughter of the Rev. S. Pullen, Fellow and tutor of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and Gresham Professor of Astronomy.
