God (1918)

I feel God who walks
so much in me, with the evening and with the sea.
With him we go together. Night falls.
With him our nights will fall together. Orphanhood...

But I feel God. And up to the point that it seems
he dictates to me some kind of good color.
Like a hospitable host, he’s good and sad;
he withers with a lover’s sweet disdain:
his heart must pain him so.

Oh, my God, newly yours I arrive
this day that I love so much this evening; today
when on the lying weight scale of some breasts,
I measure and mourn a fragile Creation.

And you, you’ll weep so much..., you, in love
with such an enormous gyrating breast...
I consecrate you God, because you love so much;
because you never smile; because your heart
must always pain you so.
