Chapter 1 was added by the Act of July 30, 1947 (c. 391, 61 Stat. 652) which codified the Copyright Act of 1909 (Mar. 4, 1909, 35 Stat. 1075).
It was completely amended by the Copyright Act of 1976 (Pub. L. 94-553, Oct. 19, 1976, 90 Stat. 2541) with effect from January 1, 1978.
- Sections 101 to 116 (except sections 104A and 106A) were added, as Chapter 2, by the Act of July 30, 1947 (c. 391, 61 Stat. 652) codifying Copyright Act of 1909 (Mar. 4, 1909, 35 Stat. 1075), and replaced by the Copyright Act of 1976 (Pub. L. 94-553, Oct. 19, 1976, 90 Stat. 2541) with effect from January 1, 1978.
- Section 104A was added by the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act (Pub. L. 103-182, Dec. 8, 1993, 107 Stat. 2115), with effect from January 1, 1994, and completely amended by the Uruguay Round Agreements Act (Pub. L. 103-465, Dec. 8, 1994, 108 Stat. 4976), with effect from January 1, 1995.
- Section 106A was added by the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 (Pub. L. 101-650, Dec. 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089), with effect from June 1, 1991.
- Section 117 was added by the Copyright Act of 1976 (Pub. L. 94-553, Oct. 19, 1976, 90 Stat. 2541), with effect from January 1, 1978, and completely amended by Public Law 96-517 (Dec. 12, 1980, 94 Stat. 2015).
- Section 118 was added by the Copyright Act of 1976 (Pub. L. 94-553, Oct. 19, 1976, 90 Stat. 2541), with effect from October 19, 1976.
- Section 119 was added by the Satellite Home Viewer Act of 1988 (Pub. L. 100-667, Nov. 16, 1988, 102 Stat. 3935).
- Section 120 was added by the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act (Pub. L. 101-650, Dec. 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089).
- Section 121 was added by the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act, 1997 (Pub. L. 104-197, Sep. 16, 1997, 110 Stat. 2394).
- Section 122 was added by the Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act of 1999 (Pub. L. 106-113, Nov. 29, 1999, 113 Stat. 1501, app. I), with effect from November 29, 1999.
