A LIST OF THE TYPE-SPECIMENS OF PARNASSIIDAE IN THE PEEBLES COLLECTION, ULSTER MUSEUM, BELFAST 22.3. 2003 version Robert` Nash Department of Zoology, Ulster Museum, Stranmillis, Belfast, BT9 5AB, Northern Ireland. andCurt Eisner Nationaal Natuurhistorische Museum, Afdeling Entomologie (Lepidoptera), Postbus 9517, 2300 RA, Leiden, The Netherlands. INTRODUCTION This catalogue follows those of Eisner (1966), Bernardi and Viette (1966) and Ackery (1973) which list the holdings of type material of Parnassius (sensu lato ie sensu Munroe (1960)) in Rijksmuseum, Leiden, the Museé National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris and the British Museum (Natural History), London. As with these cited lists its aim is to provide assistance to workers dealing with the very complex nomenclature of this group. Recent studies have suggested that some of the names listed below may well be placed into synonymy in due course. The category sub-species is used here solely to follow precedent: it may well be that many of the so-called sub-species are not taxa in that they do not refer to populations. Following Ackery (1973), whose format we. have largely adopted we are regarding “type series designated as 1 male 1 female ‘Typen’ with a varying number of ‘Cotypen’ as syntypic series unless these are covered by Eisner (1966). In this work Eisner lists the male ‘Typen’ as ‘holotypes’ the female ‘Typen’ as ‘allotypes’ and the remainder of the series as ‘Paratypen’” [I (R.N) concur with Ackery in regarding Eisner’s ‘Holotypes’ to be in fact lectotypes leaving the remainder of each series (including the ‘Allotypes’) as paralectotypes. In the case of taxa not covered by Eisner we are regarding a series as syntypic unless (a) in the original description a holotype was clearly designated, or the taxa are ‘based’ on a single specimen only, (b) a correct lectotype designation has been made.] As in Ackery (1973) statements as to current generic assignment and status are largely taken from Eisner’s (1966 : 82-190) “Index zu Parnassiana 1-6 und Parnassiana nova I-XXXVIII”. However following article 45 of the (post Monaco) International Code of Zoological Nomenclature I have regarded the term ‘variety’ in pre 1961 literature to mean sub-species. [Eisner’s use of the word ‘forma’ — probably a non-taxonomic category — is retained although its precise meaning is not clear. it has not been interpreted as denoting sub-specific rank. .Simpson (1960 : 177) discusses the use of the term variety and his remarks seem to us especially pertinent to Parnassius (s.l.) notwithstanding our following the Code. Infra-sub-specific categories other than ‘forma’ have been listed for the sake of completeness rather than as a support for their use. I do not regard infra-sub-specific names as referring to taxa.RN]Within each species the taxa (and forma etc) are listed alphabetically, followed by the reference to the original description together with the original status and combination. Data is quoted directly from labels; the sign / indicating the extent of each label. Numbers beginning Mr are Ulster Museum catalogue numbers
