The template takes two parameters, and uses a set of rules to determine which templates are relevant. For example, if both parameters are input and the work was published before 1923, it will not show {{PD-1923}} if the author died more than 70 years ago.

PD-old

PD-old-70

This work is in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or less. It is not necessarily in the public domain in the United States if published from 1923 to 1977. For a US-applicable version, check {{PD-1996}} and {{PD-URAA-same-year}} for relevant use.

This work is in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is the author's life plus 50 years or less. This alone does not satisfy the Copyright policy requirements, as American non-acceptance of the rule of the shorter term makes it not applicable to the United States where the Wikisource server is located.
