Welcome

Hello, and welcome to Wikisource! Thank you for joining the project. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Please consider putting a brief description of yourself on your user page. If you are already a contributor to another Wikimedia project, such as Wikipedia, please mention this on your user page so we know how to contact you. Also, mention which languages you understand if English is not your first language.

In any case, I hope you enjoy donating your time to grow the Wikisource library that is free for everyone to use! In discussions, please "sign" your comments using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your IP address (or username if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question here (click edit) and place {{helpme}} before your question.

Again, welcome! John Vandenberg (chat) 07:05, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanatopsis[edit]

Since you have mentioned that you are working on Thanatopsis, please feel free to take a scholarly approach in improving our text. Also note that in contrast to Wikipedia (which is intending to build a single cohesive text), Wikisource do have strict policies as each text we have is a distinct unit, so you are more than welcome to take ownership of the page and improve on it to your hearts content, and others will only interfere by making suggestions on the talk page. Here are a few things that can be done:

  • I have added an excerpt from Wikipedia, which you are more than welcome to expand or alter.
  • The actual issue it appeared in The North American Review should be noted.
  • Categories need to be added. see Category:Works
  • We want our texts to be accompanied by scans of the original printed editions, so we can proof read the text.
  • If it was revised, and the revisions are also in the public domain, we want to record all variations; if later editions vary wildly from the original, we could set up separate pages. see The Bell-Buoy for an example.
  • Where words or phrases in the text are are unusual, uncommon, or have less obvious meanings, we link to the appropriate Wikipedia article, or annotate the text.

If you can do most of these, the text can be discussed as a Featured text candidate and be placed on the Wikisource front page for a month.

Let me know if you need a hand with any of the above. John Vandenberg (chat) 05:48, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
