*OECONOMISTS, a party of French philosophers, who ingratiated themselves both with the Kind (Louis XV) and the people, under pretence of promoting oeconomy in the state, while their main object, according to the Abbe Barruel, was to subvert christianity, by circulating the writings of Voltaire, Diderot, and other infidels.
