Contains 5 Seif 1 A beast has 22 long ribs that have marrow inside, 11 on one side and 11 on the other. Each one is fixed in its Chulia (socket). Under these there are additional short ribs that have no marrow. And after all the ribs there are sockets that have no ribs fixed in them. If a majority of the 22 long ribs are broken at or within the half length toward the spine, whether it's six on one side and six on the other or 11 on one side and one on the other - it's treif. If they're dislocated from their sockets and the socket is still there it's as if it's broken. 2 If the short marrow-less ribs are broken it's kosher. 3 If a long rib is dislocated along with half its socket - it's treif. Rema: That's specifically if it's dislocated. But if it just happens to be missing it's kosher. The same rule applies if there's one extra socket even with two ribs, for instance if there's 12 long ribs containing marrow it's kosher (T"H #177). The same if there's 15 ribs on one side and the other has the right number (Rashba 396) 4 If any entire socket is uprooted, even from those that don't have ribs, it's treif. Rema: Even if it's further down where a severed spinal cord would not invalidate it (Tur). 5 If the spine is broken but not the spinal cord, it's kosher.

דיני טריפות בצלעותיה ובו חמישה סעיפים: סעיף א הבהמה יש לה כ"ב צלעות גדולות שיש בהן מוח; י"א מכאן וי"א מכאן. וכל אחת תקועה בחוליא שלה. ולמטה מהן יש עוד צלעות קטנות שאין בהם מוח. ולאחר שכלו כל הצלעות יש חוליות שאין צלעות תקועות בהן. נשברו רובן של כ"ב הגדולות מחציין ולמעלה כלפי השדרה, בין ששה מצד זה וששה מצד זה או י"א מצד זה ואחד מצד השני -- טריפה. ואם נעקרו מהחוליא והחוליא קיימת הוי כאילו נשתברו. סעיף ב נשתברו צלעות הקטנות שאין בהם מוח -- כשרה. סעיף ג נעקר מהצלעות גדולות צלע וחצי חוליא עמה -- טריפה: הגה: ודוקא נעקרה אבל אם אירע כך חסירה כשר וה"ה אם יתירה חוליא אחת אפילו עם ב' צלעות כגון שנמצאו י"ב צלעות גדולות שיש בהן מוח כשר (ת"ה סימן קע"ז). וכן אם נמצאו בצד אחד ט"ו צלעות ובצד אחד כתקונו (רשב"א שצ"ו): סעיף ד נעקרה חוליא אחת כולה אפילו מאותן שאין בהם צלעות -- טריפה. הגה: ואפי' הוא למטה במקום שאין פסיקת חוט השדרה פוסל שם (טור): סעיף ה אם נשברה השדרה ולא נפסק חוט השדרה -- כשרה.
