Lawrence Rooke,

MATHEMATICIAN AND ASTRONOMER,

Was born at Deptford in 1623, and educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, whence, after taking his degree, he removed to Oxford. In 1652 he obtained the Gresham professorship of astronomy, and subsequently of geometry. He was one of the first members of the Royal Society, and several of his papers are published in the "Philosophical Transactions." His death occurred in 1662.
