Ez 3417)—cstr. אֵל Ez 3111; pl. cstr. אֵילֵי Ex 1515 Ez 1713 + 2 K 2415 Qr; (Kt אולי v. אוּל); אֵלֵי Ez 3221 (del. Co, v. G).—leader, chief א׳ מוֺאָב Ex 1515; א׳ הָאָרֶץ Ez 1713 2 K 2415 Qr; א׳ גּוֺיִם Ez 3111 (אֵלִים Jb 4117 v. sub אלה; perh. אֵלֵיהֶם Ez 3114 but cf. infr. iv איל & also אֶל Note 1).

iv. [אַ֫יִל?] n.m. terebinth (prob. as prominent, lofty tree, v. Di Gn 126 146)—cstr. אֵיל only n.pr. אֵיל פָּארָן vid. infr.; pl. אֵילִים Is 129; אֵלִים Is 575 cstr. אֵילֵי Is 613; sf. אֵלֵיהֶם Ez 3114 (>del. Co vid. V A).—terebinth (cf. אֵלָה); as marking idol-shrines Is 129 575 (so Che Di etc. > gods); fig. of ransomed ones of Zion אֵילֵי הַצֶּדֶק; perh. of haughty ones Ez 3114.

אֵיל פָּארָן n.pr.loc. (terebinth (or palm? v. Di) of Paran) town & harbour at head of Ælanitic Gulf Gn 146 (v. Di); = אֵלָה 3641; אֵילַת Dt 28 2 K 1422 166; אֵילוֺת 1 K 926 2 K 166; close to Ezion Geber (v. 133 עֶצְיוֺן גֶּבֶר).

[אֵילִים], alw. אֵילִם n.pr.loc. (= place of terebinths or other great trees, v. Di Gn 146 & Ex 1527 (12 fountains & 70 palms)) 2ud station of Isr. in desert after passing sea Ex 161.1 Nu 339.10; אֵי֫לִמָה Ex 1527 Nu 339; prob. = Wady Gharandel cf. RobBR i. 100, 105.

i. אֵלָה n.f. terebinth ( = אֵילָה (?) v. iv. איל > StaGesch. 455 wh. derives fr. אֵל = divine; but cf. ib. on lack of clear distinction betw. אֵלָה, אֵלוֺן & אַלּוֺן)—Gn 354 + 15 t. + אֵילָה Gn 4921 (for MT אַיָּלָה v. infr.)—terebinth = Pistacia terebinthus, Linn., a deciduous tree with pinnate leaves & red berries; occasional in Palestine; grows to great age; always of single tree; near Shechem Gn 354 (E) cf. †אַלָּה Jos 2426 (E, rd. אֵלָה ?), Ophrah Ju 611.19; in Jabesh 1 Ch 1012; tree in which Absalom was caught 2 S 189.9.10.14; v. also 1 K 1314 ; expressly of idol-shrine Ho 413 (|| אַלּוֺן, לִבְנֶה) Ez 613; as fading, withering, sim. of Judah Is 130; as hewn down, sim. id. 613 (|| אַלּוֺן); fig. of Naphtali אֵילָה שְׁלֻחָה Gn 4921 (G Ew Ol Di > MT אַיָּלָה hind q.v.) a slender terebinth, v. ii. אֵלָה n.pr.m. (terebinth, cf. Gn 4921 sub I. אֵלָה) 1. a chief of Edom Gn 3641 = 1 Ch 152 ( = אֵילַת n.pr.loc. ? v. Di). 2. son of Baasha; reigned two years in Isr. 1 K 166.8.13.14. 3. father of Hoshea who was last king of Isr. 2 K 1530 171 181.9. 4. a son of Caleb 1 Ch 415.15. 5. a son of Uzzi 1 Ch 98.

i. אֵלֹון n.[f.] terebinth (= אֵלָה)א׳ cstr. Gn 126 + 4 t.; pl. cstr. אֵלוֺנֵי Gn 1318 + 3 t.—terebinth (or other tall tree, cf. infr. on 1 S 103 Ju 45), marking shrine, & hence used in topogr. designations; א׳ מוֺרֶה (teacher's terebinth) Gn 126 (v. Di) so Dt 1130; א׳ מְעוֺנְנִים (conjurors' tereb.) Ju 937; distinguished by owner or ruler א׳ מַמְרֵא Gn 1318 1413 181; by neighbouring town צענים(ב) Ju 411; cf. א׳ בְּצַעֲנַנִּים Jos 1933 (edd. אַלּוֺן, but v.
