His speech, made in the Senate on April 4, 1898, favoring the independence of Cuba, was remarkable for its force and eloquence. He is in every sense a self-made man, and one whom his State delights to honor. He is unmarried, and lives at Butte City with his aged mother, whom he has provided with a home ever since he was fourteen years of age.
