He is now in general practice and is chemist and milk inspector of the Syracuse board of health. Engel, Peter, clergyman, abbot, was born Feb. 3, 1856, in St. Nicholas, Wis. In 1874 he graduated from St. John's university at CoUegeville, Minn. He took orders and entered the order of St. Benedict, advancing until he became mitred abbot, with the title of Eight Eeverend. Englehard, Joseph, Adolphus, soldier, journalist, was born Sept. 27, 1832, in Monticello, Miss. He entered the confederate army as captain and quartermaster in 1861; and in 1863 was promoted to be major and quartermaster of Branch's brigade. He became the editor of the Wilmington Journal in 1865, and was afterward elected secretary of state, which office he held till his death. He died Feb. 17, 1879, in Raleigh, N.C.
Engelman, Adolph, soldier, was born in Germany. In 1861 he became lieutenant-colonel in the forty-fifth regiment Illinois infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers. He died Oct. 6, 1890.

founder, author, was born July 2, 1847, in St. Louis, Mo. He was the founder of the Polyclinic school of medicine in St. Louis; and subsequent a noted physician of Boston, Mass. He was the author of Labor among Primitive Peoples, or the Development of Obstetric Science; and other works. He died in 1903 in Boston, Mass. Engerud, Edward, lawyer, jurist, was bom Feb. 13, 1868, in Racine, Wis. In 18971901 he was assistant states attorney of Cass county; N.D. and in 1902-04 he was assistant United States attorney for the district of North Dakota. In 1904-07 he was judge of the supreme court of North Dakota; and then resumed the practice of law.

manufacturer, business president, was born Nov. 17, 1844, in Swedesboro, N.J. During the civil war he soldier,
served as third sergeant; and was in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Since 1880 he has been a member of the Biddle hardware company of Philadelphia. He is president of the Morristown ice company; president of the Auburn bolt and nut company; president of the Auburn screw company; and a director in various other corporations.

Engle, Frederick, naval officer, was born in 1799 in Delaware county. Pa. In 1814 he entered the navy as a midshipman; and was retired in 1866 as rear admiral. Prior to his death he was governor of the naval asylum. He died Feb. 12, 1868, in Philadelphia, Pa. Engle, John Summerfield, clergyman, auwas born June 26, 1869, in Augusta county, Va. He was pastor of Fort Royal and Salem, Va. and for six years was a pastor of Baltimore, Md. Since 1905 he has been editor of the Baltimore Southern Methodi&t. congressman, was born Nov. 23, 1855, in New Bedford, Mass. In 1872-75 he was an apprentice in the United States navy yard of Mare Island, Cal. In 1875 iie was engaged as a civil engineer; and since 1878 has been a mining engineer. In 1890-1905 he was superintendent of the Nevada division of the South Yuba water company. He has been vice-president of the Oustomah gold mining company. In 1906-11 he was a representative from California to the fifty-ninth congress to fill a vacancy and to the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican. Engles, William Morrison, clergyman, author, was born Oct. 12, 1797, in Philadelphia, Pa. For many years. he was editor of The Presbyterian of Philadelphia. He was the author of Records of the Presbyterian Church; English Martyrology; Sick-Room Devotion; Bible Dictionary; Sailor's Companion; and Soldier's Pocket Book. He died Nov 27 1867, in Philadelphia, Pa. English, E. H., lawyer, jurist. In 1854-74 he was chief justice of the supreme court of Arkansas. English, Earl, naval officer, was born Feb. 1824, in Crosswick, N.J. He was commissioned captain in 1871; commodore in 1880; and rear admiral in 1884.
