English, George Letchworth, mineralogist, scientist, author, was horn June 14, 1864, in Philadelphia, Pa. He has lectured on mineralogy in the New York board of education course and elsewhere. He is associate editor of the Encyclopædia in Elementary Mineralogy.
English, James Edward, manufacturer. congressman, governor, United States senator, was born March 13, 1812, in New Haven, Conn. In 1855 he was a member of the state legislature of Connecticut; in 1856 was elected to the state senate, and declined a re-election. In 1861-65 he was a representative from Connecticut to the thirty. seventh and thirty-eighth congresses. He was the twenty-fifth governor of Connecticut in 1867-69 and 1870-71; and in 1875-77 he was United States senator to fill a vacancy. He died March 2, 1890, in New Haven, Conn.
English, John N., soldier, farmer, legislator, was born March 31, 1810, in Henry county, Ky. He served in the Blackhawk war and in 1832 participated in the battles of Wisconsin and Missouri. Ile served in the twenty-third, thirtieth thirty-first and thirty-second general assemblies of Illinois state legislature, He was a successful farmer. He died Aug. 20, 1888, in Jerseyville, Ill. English, John Nelson, pioneer, legislator. He took a prominent part in the formation and early settlement of the southern part of Illinois; and served in the state legislature of Illinois for four terms.

He is the author of a law text-book entitled The Origin and End of Civil Government; a novel entitled Is There Destiny; and a volume of poems. English, Warren B., soldier, state senator, congressman, was born on May 1, 1846, in Charlestown, Va. He served in the confeder. ate army. He was elected a member of the California state senate in 1882; in 1884 was a delegate to the national democratic convention in Chicago. In 1893-95 he was a representative to the fifty-third congress us a democrat.
English, Thomas Dunn, lawyer, physician, congressman. author, poet, was born June 29, 1819, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1844 he edited a daily paper in New York; and since that time has principally been engaged in journalism and authorship in Newark, NJ. In 1863-64 he served in the New Jersey legis. lature; and in 1891-95 he was a representative to the fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. His principal novels are Walter Wolf; Ambrose Fecit; and Jacob Schuyler's Millions. His poems have been published in volumes known as American Ballads; Boys' Book of Battle Lyrics; and Select Poems; and also a collection of his fairy tales called Once Upon a Time. His song of Ben Bolt, written in 1843, has achieved world-wide renown; and his patriotic ballad of 1860-64 attracted much attention. He died April 1, 1902, in Newark, N.J.
English, William E., soldier, business man, legislator author, is the only son of William H. Since his childhood he bas resided in Indian. apolis, Ind., where he controls large financial interests, he being the owner of English's Opera-house, English's hotel, English's block and of numerous other buildings. In 1878 he was elected a representative in the Indiana state legislature; and in 1883-85 he was a representative to the forty-eighth congress. He was a delegate to the national conventions of bis party in 1892 and and 1896. He is president of the board of park commissioners of the city of Indianapolis; president of the Indianapolis commercial club, and one of the most prominent masons in the state. He served during the Santiago campaign of the Spanish-American war as captain and A.D.C. upon the staff of General Joseph Wheeler and was disabled during the engagement of July 1st before Santiago. He is now colonel upon the staff of the governor of Indiana and department commander for Indiana of the Spanish-American war veterans association. He is author of A History of Early Masonry in Indiana.
