Elizabeth, daughter o f John and Salome (R c c d ) Htir^h. H e was twcnty-onc years old when they settled on the farm then owned by his fathcr-in-)aw% later descending to his w ife. In 1843, in hne with the custom o f his forefathers, he built himself a house, which is now the property o f his granddaughters, Katherine M . and Ellen E ., daughters of Simon and Elizabelh ( F a u x ) Vastine. He was a large landowner* cultivating between four hundred and fifty and five hundred acres. In religious faith he w as a member of the Lutheran Church, and politically he w as a W hig. H e died in i 8 §0 * his widow in 1890. T o M r. and M rs. Vastine were born six sons aud two daughters: ( 1 ) Am os is fully men* tioned elsewhere in this work. (2 ) Jacob 11, is mentioned below. { 3 ) Hugh Iiu rsh, bom Ju ly 22, 1838, married Susan, daughter o f Wilson M etllcr, and followed farming throughout his life, operating three farm s in Hush and Gearhart townshi]>s, Northumber­ land Co., Pa. They had children: Wilson M ., Elizabeth B . and Hugh Spencer (married Sarah M elU er). (4 ) Simon owned two large farm s in Rush township, including the home­ stead property previously mentioned. H e mar­ ried Elizabeth F au x, daughter o f W illiam, and their children are Katherine M. and Ellen E . ( 5 ) E zra, lK>rn in 1R43, upon reaching his m ajority joined his brother Am os in buying a farm* disposing o f hts interest the following year and later buying another, which he also sold. In 1876 he bought the farm now known as the Ezra V'astinc estate and in 1877 built on it the hrick house. In the spring o f 1895 he removed to Danville, P,a.* residing on West Alurket street. H e died Feb. 24, 1896, and w as biiric<l in a lot beside hts parents in a Lutheran ccmctcrj* in M ayberry township, .Montour county. U c w as a successful farm er, aud at (he tinic o f his death w as a director of the l>anvtUe National Hank. H e married Sarah C ., daughter o f Koliert and Bcthia (Ban ghart) Davidson, and to them were bom two <lnughtcrs, Bcthia and S ara M ary. (6) Elizalieth Ann married Jam es Oglesby. M . D., o f Danville, Pa., ,and had two children, Ccoi^c Bell (deceased) and William V . (an attorney of Danville). { 7 ) Daniel and (8 ) Ellen died before reaching the age o f twelve. |,acoh Hursh Vastine. M . For a time he practiced in Numidia, ColumbU Co., Pa., Uter removing to Danville* Montour county, where ho was loe,atcd five years, and finally* in 1883. settling in Catawissa. (Columbia county, where he died Ja n . 2* 1904. H is widow still resides there. H e w as president of the F irst National Bank o f Catawissa until his death. I'h is liank w,as organized and char­ tered in 18 9 1, taking over what was known as the Catawissa Deposit Bank, whose first oresident w as M . G . H ughes; George M. Tustin w as cashier and his brother, .A. L . Tustin* also held that {x>sition for a time. Dr. J . H. U siinc w as the first president of the First .National Bank, and u]K>n his death S . D. Kinard succeeded to the presidency. When he died J . T . F o x was elected, and is still serving. In November, (803, William M . Vastine, son o f D r. J . H . astinc* w'os made cashier, and has Idled the position success­ fully and satisfactorily ever since. In Novemlier* 19 12, the other oflicials were Luther Eyer. vice president; directors, C . E . In October, 18 6 1, Dr. N’astinc married Sarah Hughes, daughter o f George and Nancy (H ard er) Hughes, o f Catawissa* and they had children ,as follow s: Henrietta Hughes married A sa Spencer, o f Philipsburg* Fa., and has tw‘o children. M uriel Lee and 5^rah Hughes; Elizal>cth died when one year old; (ieorgc Hughes, M . D., is mentioned below: William M ayberry is mentioned h clow; Jacob Marion, M . D.. is mentioned below; Harriet B. married H orace C . Booz, o f .Ardmore. Pa.* and has two children. Horace C, Jr.* and Donald V astin e: Sarah Hughes married Ralph R oy G riffith: C . Catawissa schools, Bloomsbiic^ State Normal school and .Susquehanna University, from which he w as gradtiated in 1887. He then entered the medical department of the Uni­ versity o f Pennsylvania! from which he was graduated in 18 9 1, spending the winter of 1891 and spring o f 1892 in study at Heidel­ berg and Vienna.
