Public Law 100-312 100th Congress Joint Resolution May 6, 1988 [S.J. Res. 190]

To authorize and request the President to issue a proclamation designating June 6-12, 1988, as "National Fishing Week".

Whereas the United States Bureau of the Census reported that fiftyfour million residents of our country participated in sport fishing in 1980; Whereas sport fishing is a family oriented, outdoor, recreational activity that provides therapeutic rewards and enjoyment to people of all ages; Whereas the demands for goods and services by sport fishing participants is estimated to generate $25,000,000,000 in economic activity and employment for an estimated six hundred thousand individuals each year; Whereas fishing promotes respect for Nation's marine, estuarine, and fresh waters, and their associated plant and animal communities; and Whereas our country's league of fishing enthusiasts represent a constituency that seeks to prevent the degradation of our Nation's diverse aquatic habitats: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President is requested and authorized to issue a proclamation designating June 6-12, 1988, as "National Fishing Week" and calling upon Federal, State, and local government agencies, and the people of the United States to observe the week with appropriate programs and activities.
