Appropriations herein made for the Bureau of Standards shall be available for expenses of attendance at meetings concerned with standardization and research, or either, when incurred on the written authority of the Secretary of Commerce . Total, Bureau of Standards, $2,506,746, of which amount not to exceed $2,047,242 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia . BUR EAU OF L IGHTHOU SES Salaries : For the commissioner and other personal services in the Distr ict of Colum bia, $ 110,00 0 . General expenses : For supplies, including replacement of and nece ssary additi ons to exist ing eq uipment , repa irs, m ainten ance, and incidental expenses of lighthouses and other lights, beacons, buoy- age, fog signals, lighting of rivers heretofore authorized to be lighted, light vessels, other ai ds to nav igation, and ligh thouse te nders, in clud- ing the establishment, repair, and improvement of beacons and day marks, and purchase of land for same ; establishment of post lights, buoys, submarine signals, and fog signals ; establishment of oil or carbide houses, not to exceed $10,000 : Provided, That any oil or car bide hous e ere cted here under shal l no t exc eed $ 1,000 in cost
construction of necessary outbuildings at a cost not exceeding $1,000 at any one light station in any fiscal year ; improvement of grounds and buildings connected with light stations and depots ; restoring light stations and depots and buildings connected therewith : Pro- vided further, That such restoration shall be limited to the original purpose of the structures ; wages of persons attending post lights ; temporary employees and field force while engaged on works of general repair and maintenance, and laborers and mechanics at lighthouse depots ; rations and provisions or commutation thereof for working parties in the field, officers and crews of light vessels and tenders, and officials and other authorized persons of the Light- hous e Serv ice on duty on boa rd of such te nders or ves sels, and mo ney accruing from commutation for rations and provisions for the above- named persons on board of tenders and light vessels or in working parties in the field may be paid on proper vouchers to the person havincharge of the mess of such vessel or party ; not exceeding $2,00d- for packing, crating, and transporting personal household effects of employees when transferred from one official station to another for permanent duty ; purchase of rubber boots, oilskins, rubber gloves, and coats, caps, and aprons for stewards' depart- ments on vessels ; reimbursement under rules prescribed by the Secretary of Commerce of keepers of light stations and masters of light vessels and of lighthouse tenders for rations and provisions and clothing furnished shipwrecked persons who may be temporarily provided for by them, not exceeding in all $5,000 in any fiscal year ; fuel, light, and rent of quarters where necessary for keepers of light- houses ; purchase of land sites for fog signals ; rent of necessary ground for all such lights and beacons as are for temporary use or to mark changeable channels and which in consequence can not be made permanent ; rent of offices, depots, and wharves ; traveling expenses, including travel for the examinations authorized by the Act entitled "An Act to provide for retirement for disability in the Lighthouse Service," approved March 4, 1925 (U . S . C., p . 1095, sec . 765) ; mileage ; library books for light stations and vessels, and technical books and periodicals not exceeding $1,000 ; traveling and subsistence expenses of teachers while actually employed by States or private persons to instruct the children of keepers of lighthouses ; all other co ntingent expenses of distri ct office s and dep ots, incl uding 1125 Attendance at tech- nic al, e tc ., meetings .
